Love for Reading

Instilling a Love for Reading in Your Child

ValentineBook 2

1.   Read aloud to your children daily!  Even older kids like being read to.

2.   Visit the library often or take your child to the bookstore to purchase his or her very own book!

3.   Allow your child to read favorite books over and over.

 4.   Let your child CHOOSE what they want to read.

 5.   Expose them to different genres.  Make sure they have access to interesting, engaging books.

 6.   Help your child find a favorite author and read several of his or her books.

 7.   Talk about books with your child.  What part did you like best?  Who is your favorite character?  Find out about your child as a reader.

 8.   Set the example by reading yourself.  If your children see you reading for enjoyment, they will want to read also!

 9.   Incorporate technology into reading.  There are so many ways to access virtual texts these days!

 10. Create a cozy, inviting place to read at home.

 11. Start a reading routine.  Read at the same time in the same place each day.  Example:  Read a book with your child in bed each night at bedtime.

 12. Give books as gifts.  Show children books are a special item that should be treasured.  You can even write a special message on the inside with the date and your name.
