Thank you for the privilege of teaching your children this year. It has been wonderful getting to know each and every one of them! I see great things in their future! They have all grown academically and socially. I am very proud of them! They are truly unique people.

Have a safe and  stress free summer! Enjoy the time with your children!

Sincerely,

        Spelling B

Spelling words are words that begin with -a or -be.

Students need to write words in cursive on the spelling test. We have been practicing D'Nealian writing in our classroom this past semester. The pretest will be on Thursday. If your child earns a A the do not need to take the final test on Friday.Help your child study their words every night. A free spelling website is spellingcity.com. It has spelling games and puzzles and best of all you can plug in our weekly spelling words!

READING

Students will read Poppa's New Pants. The reading strategy is predicting. The comprehension skill is inferring.

Students need to read an AR book worth at least 2 points to pass the AR test earning 2 or more points for a reading grade for the month of May. This goal must be met by May 20th. When students begin 4th grade they will be required to read a book worth at least 3 points.  We are trying to prepare them for next year so please check on your child's progress.

Students continue in their flex reading groups.

Students go to literacy centers or work in a guided reading group.

Students will continue to work with their partner on 6 Minute Solution. This is a 1 minute reading that students do with a partner. Students work on a passage a week. Each day they try to increase their speed and accuracy to become more fluid readers. Students have been working well together and supporting each others' learning.

           WRITING

At the writing center students will choose a May topic to write about.

                                                              ENGLISH

Students will practice the object pronoun jingle.  Students will also write pattern 2 sentences which contain 2 nouns and an action verb.

We will be performing a play called "You Can Do It" on May 18th. Cast A will perform at 1:00. Cast B will perform at 1:30. Please practice lines with your child. We are assigning parts and have sent home copies of the play. Students need to have their lines memorized so we can start practicing with props.

Look in the newsletter for props we still need. If you have any on the list please send them in with your child. Thanks to those who have already sent something in for us!

Also, fill out the form for Career Day if you would like to share information on your career with the students. A 10 - 15 minute talk on Friday, May 18th, would be great! I encourage you to bring in items from your job to share with the students. Please let me know if you're interested. Thanks!

Math

Students will do a blocks in the bag experiment and design spinners.

Please practice basic addition, subtraction, multiplication facts at home. Many students still haven't mastered addition and subtraction. Use flash cards, fact triangles, and the websites I've suggested for extra practice. We do rocket math in the classroom, but some students still need more practice. We will also be traveling to the computer lab to do Study Island math. If your child struggles with basic math facts go to multiplication.com  or brainpop. com for extra practice.

Homelinks are sent home Monday through Thursday and needs to be checked at home before they are returned to school. This work reinforces what we do in class.

Social Studies/Science

In science we will be studying alternate forms of energy.

If you are able to help with literacy centers I need help on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:10 to 10:40.  The students and I would love to see you!  Please let me know a day ahead so I can have materials ready for you.

Let your child use your phone apps to practice math facts. There are loads of free apps out there! Some apps your child might like include: Talking Kids Math, Math Quiz Game, and Flash Math. There are loads more!

Remind your child to follow PBIS Rules so all students can reach their potential in the classroom.

If you are able to help with literacy centers I need help on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The students and I would love to see you! Please let me know a day ahead of time so I can have materials ready for you.

Please let me know if you are available to copy. I can use the help!

Go to brainpop.com to help your child in all areas of our school curriculum. This is a website with curriculum based content that can help students bolster their academic achievements. The content is mapped to our academic standards. Best of all...your child will love the animated game format of the website. Learning can be fun!!!

Please send in box tops!

Remember to encourage your child to read at home. 30 minutes a night would be great! If they get an 80%  or better on their AR tests worth at least 1 point or more they can sign their name on the classroom bingo board!

Please send in items for our Treasure Chest.  The students may use their panther paws to get something from the Treasure Chest.

Please check your child's assignment book every night. At the bottom of the each day's page your child should have circled either green, yellow or red indicating their PBIS behavior for the day.

Third Grade Discipline Plan

This year Virden Elementary School will be following the PBIS Discipline Plan. Third grade will also be following this plan. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Support. The emphasis of this plan is rewarding and encouraging positive behavior.  Information about PBIS was sent home in the folder at the beginning of the year.  There are three basic rules that we expect students to follow.

  1. Be safe
  2. Be respectful
  3. Be responsible

Each classroom has a poster displayed that has a parking lot, a traffic light and numbered cars with magnets. Each student is assigned a numbered car.  Students who follow the rules keep his/her car on the green light of the traffic light.  A student who does not follow the rules will be asked to move his/her car to the parking lot. This is a warning only. It gives the student a chance to reflect and change his/her behavior.   If improvement is made the student will be asked to move his/her car in a positive direction, back to the green light.

On the other hand, if a student’s behavior does not improve but worsens then he/she will be asked to move his/her car to the yellow light. Any time a student goes to yellow light there will be a consequence.  Yellow light consequences include a loss of recess and a note to the parents.  Students on the yellow light may return to the parking lot if his/her behavior improves. It cannot go back to the green light after it has been to the yellow light.

Continued misbehavior or more serious behavior could result in a student moving his/her car to the red light.  Red light consequences include loss of privilege, restitution/apology of the student, change of seating arrangement, time out from activity or privilege, teacher/student conference, parent/teacher conference, behavior contract, referral to principal, or referral to school counselor for individual or small group intervention.

Students who show positive behavior will be rewarded and encouraged for their behavior. Each third grade teacher will offer special rewards to their students for positive behavior.  There will also be monthly rewards, quarterly rewards, school-wide rewards, and unannounced rewards for students who are showing positive behavior.  We want all our students to choose to be safe, be respectful, and be responsible.

Please go over this information with your child. If you have any questions please call me at 965-5424.

This is going to be one fantastic school year!
