******************************** Parent Volunteers

Remember you must have a volunteer form filled out and on file with the office.  Thank you in advance for your help.

REMINDERS

  • Please remember to check your child's book bag and agenda (also called the assignment notebook) daily for papers to sign and return, graded papers or notes to view and clean out.
  • Always try to do this task with your child present. This way he or she sees you taking an interest in his or her learning and can take responsibility for what can and cannot be discarded.  We hear many say "My mom threw my homework away" to which we respond you should have been there to tell her which papers to keep and which to discard.
  • We are really working hard on helping the students to develop a routine for daily homework and organization skills to bring the correct materials home and then back to school the following school day.
  • A great habit to get into is using the same place to complete any homework and immediately putting the assignments and books in the book bag for the following morning.

                                      Book 2

  • Watch for the weekly strips to come home on Fridays or Mondays which show both behavior and homework issues.  If your child returns his/her strip with your signature he/she receives one Panther Pride for every good day shown.  The students can cash their Panther Prides in for a variety of fun incentives:  Grab Bag, Lunch with a Teacher, Sit at the Teacher's desk are just a few choices.
  • The three rules are: 1) Be safe.  2) Be Respectful. 3) Be Responsible.
  • If you see mostly rule 3's it would be for incomplete homework or lost or forgotten materials (books, notebooks, worksheets, etc.)
  • The codes for subjects are: M=Math, SP=Spelling, Eng=English, W=Writing Lit=Literature, SS=Social Studies, and SCI=Science.

Little girl BOOK ORDERS Little boy

BOOK ORDERS ARE FRIDAY, MAY 4TH.

  • Book orders are due on the 10th of each month or the following Monday if the 10th falls on a weekend.
  • Please make checks out to: Scholastic Book Clubs. You may write one check for the total order even if ordering from several different order forms such as Lucky, Arrow, Tab, or Click.
  • Be sure to put your child's name on each order form as well as in an envelope or a ziploc baggie.  This is helpful when delivering the books once they arrive.
  • If you ever want to order without your child knowing (in the case of a birthday gift) just drop the order by the school with a note to keep it a secret.  I will notify you when the order arrives.
  • All proceed from the 4th grade book orders go towards incentives for our grade level students.  We use the free points to buy items for the grab bag as well as our Christmas goody bags.

ACCELERATED READER STARTED IN SEPTEMBER AND WILL CONTINUE EACH MONTH THROUGH MAY.  EACH FOURTH GRADER NEEDS TO READ AND PASS A COMPUTERIZED QUIZ OVER THE BOOK READ by APRIL 30TH.

This is a very achievable, and expected goal for 4th grade readers.  Please support your student and help him/her be successful by reading with him/her and asking questions about the story.

Some example questions are:

Who's your favorite character and why?

What do you think will happen in the next chapter?

If you divide the number of pages by the number of days in the month and start on the 1st day of the month, most students only have to read 5-10 pages each day!! Your encouragement and support are needed!

SCIENCE

We just covered a chapter on Properties of Matter and learned about atoms and molecules which are arranged in different ways depending on the State of Matter, Solid, Liquid or Gas.

We are now moving in to the Solid Earth and learning about the Rock Cycle which explains Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary Rocks.  We will also discuss rapid changes such as earthquakes and volcanoes, and slow changes like erosion.

We will finish the year by getting outside for a few activities like a Trash Walk in which we will sort, count and record the types of trash found and discuss the natural resources wasted.  We will also be looking into what causes our weather and taking air temperature, wind speed, and precipitation readings.

We are studying our final region of the United States, the West.  When this unit is completed we will begin more in depth studies of each state as assigned to each student.  We will be researching and writing reports to present with visual aids.  In addition to that, we will be creating posters and a sidewalk chalk display educating others about each of the states.
