What's Happening in Our Room

We will be visiting the Virden Fire Station on May 4th.  The children will get a visit from the firemen and then we will take a bus through the station.  Afterwards, we will go to the West Park to spray water hoses.  Parents are welcome to meet us at the park around 9:00 to watch the children.  The children need to wear tennis shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather.

We will also be going on a tour of Richland Stables in Auburn on May 8th.  The children will get to see the horses, goats, and other animals at the stables.  We will also be having a picnic lunch if the weather cooperates.  Parents are welcome to meet us there to help supervise the students.  We have had a wonderful learning experience in the past at the stables.

On May 18th, all the Kindergarten students will be having a fun day at the West Park.  We will be leaving the school around 11:00 to have lunch and play games at the park.  We welcome all parents to come and enjoy in the fun!

Alphabet Recognition and Sight Words

We have learned to read and write all 26 letters of the alphabet.  The children have also learned the sounds to over 30 different letters and digraphs.  Please take time to review these letters and sounds at home.  Sight words for the fourth quarter were sent home.  These words are to be added to the ones from the second and third quarter.   Your child will have 42 sight words that they will be tested on at the end of the year.  These words should be familiar to your child.  They are color words and words we use daily in the morning message.  We read these words daily, but extra practice is needed at home too.

PBIS BEHAVIOR REWARDS

NorthMac School District follows a behavior plan called PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support).  It entails three rules to follow:

Be Safe

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

Good behavior is rewarded with Panther Pride tickets and grade level rewards.  There are monthly PBIS rewards for students who demonstrate appropriate school behavior.  A student will not qualify for the reward if he/she has more than the maximum amount of yellow slips or a red slip.  The amount of yellow slips will lesson monthly.  Our  goal is for all students to work toward being safe, respectful, and responsible.

Warmer weather is here, but it is changing on a daily basis!  Please remember to check the weather daily to see if your child will need no jacket, a light jacket, or a heavy jacket.  Coats can always be brought in their backpacks and taken out when needed.

Backpack/Folder

Students need to bring a backpack to school every day.  This is used to carry books, papers, notes, etc.  Please get into the habit of checking this bag as soon as your child enters the house after school.

The Virden Elementary folder your child was given on the first day of school will be used for important papers and newsletters.  Please return it daily.

       Changes in Transportation

You must send in a written note if your child is going home a different way than usual.  Do not rely on your child to tell me this information.

            Lunch and Milk Money  Lunch

Please put all money sent to school in an envelope or baggie and indicate why it is being sent.

Lunch money is collected on the first day of the week.  You many pay by the week, month, or send in a set amount.  The office will notify you on Fridays if you owe any amount.

If you child is bringing his/her lunch and are buying milk, they need to pay 35 cents each day.

Snacks/Birthdays

Each day we have milk and snacks.  A monthly snack calendar will go home at the beginning of each month.  I try to have your child bring snack on or close to their birthday. No special birthday treats or edible goodie bags can be send in.  We are focusing on healthy snacks.  All snacks must be pre-packaged and/or purchased in a state approved kitchen.  You may refer to the handbook for further information and a list of approved snacks.

Allergies

A new rule in our handbook this year is regarding peanuts.  Any food item that contains tree nuts, peanuts or items processed in an area that may come in contact with peanuts are not allowed in the classroom.  I also have a child in my class that has extensive food allergies that go beyond nuts.  Our goal is for all children to be in a safe environment at school.

Dismissals

There are many days that we get out early throughout the school year.  Please refer to the school calendar often, check notes sent home, and check the school web site for early out days.  If your child is not picked up at dismissal, then they are taken to the office and a parent and/or guardian is called.
