Finding Just-Right Books

Finding “Just-Right” Books

A JUST RIGHT book is one that is comfortable to read but is still a little challenging.  You can become a better reader by reading these books.

Sometimes a book you choose may be TOO EASY.  A book is too easy if. . .

  • you can read all the words smoothly with good expression.
  • you know how to say all of the words.
  • you can read the book very quickly.
  • you are not learning anything new when you read the book.

Sometimes a book you choose may be TOO HARD.  A book is too hard if. . .

  • you have trouble with at least 5 words on the page.
  • you are puzzled about what is happening in this book.
  • your reading sounds very slow and choppy.
  • you get frustrated while reading.

Most of the books you choose should be JUST-RIGHT.  You know you have picked a just-right book when. . .

  • you can read most of the words.
  • you understand what you are reading.
  • you can read the book with a voice that is fluent, not choppy.  It sounds a lot like you are talking.
  • you can sound out the hard words and figure out what they mean by using the words around them.
  • you only need a little help from the teacher or another adult.
  • you really enjoy reading this book!
